Sometimes a football player can make a great impact in just few games. Kevin Joiner Jr, a class of 2026 quarterback out of Texas, saw his past season cut to four games this past season because of injury. However, in those four games, Joiner completed 62-of-73 passes for over 700 yards while also playing safety on defense. He told Youth1 that he’s been playing the quarterback position since he was five-years-old.
“When I was little, I had a ball, and I threw it really hard at a base, “ said Joiner. “My dad saw it and he thought I could be a good quarterback.” From that point on, Joiner took an interest in learning more about the position. “We started watching NFL games, and I started getting more knowledge of the game.” Joiner also watches online videos of quarterbacks to see what he can learn from and apply to his game. “Sometimes I search up some quarterback videos on how to read the defense so I can learn how to choose what receiver to throw to in an actual game.”
Joiner is aware of the responsibilities that come with the position of being the quarterback of a football team. Being a leader is usually one of those responsibilities and Joiner doesn’t shy away from it. “I like getting to know my teammates better,” Joiner said when asked what he enjoys being about playing quarterback. Joiner added that the game of football has helped him helped him “communicate better with other people” off the football field.
One of the many traits that a skilled football player should have is being able to be coached. “I am very coachable,” said Joiner. “I can be told about the mistake I made and can make the change without getting an attitude about it in order to get it right.” Self-discipline is another trait that Joiner has as a football player. “I will work with no one telling me to do it,” said Joiner. “I do 200 push-ups and 100 scissor-jumps a day with no one telling me to do it.”
Joiner took part in The MegaVI by NextGen All America back in late January. The three-day, invite-only event featured quarterbacks from the 2023-2027 classes taking part in both learning and competitive situations. “I was nervous for the first 30 minutes,” Joiner responded when asked if he felt nervous about competing against other talented quarterbacks. “After that, I got more confident and started doing my thing. I learned how to throw off my back-foot and throw the football on the run.”
Outside of going to a few camps this offseason, Joiner plans on working on becoming a better football player.
“I just want to be great.”
