Quarterback Michael Johnson Jr. is a Class of 2019 prospect that is already turning heads on the national stage. A product of The King's Academy in San Jose, California, Johnson was recently
praised for his performance at one of the Rivals Quarterback Challenge Regional Camps.
Johnson, son of former Arizona State and Akron quarterback Michael Johnson Sr., was lauded by Rivals.com Recruiting experts for his great build, strong performance in drills and his ability to pick up and implement what the coaches were teaching him.
“At the (Rivals Quarterback Challenge), I worked on base and footwork drills, throwing on the run drills, target accuracy drills, long-ball throws, mental processing and decision-making drills,” Johnson said. “I feel I threw on the run well. I could improve on my consistent accuracy...I feel I matched up well with most of the older guys. Events like that will give me more confidence going into my freshman year.”
Johnson will enter the 2015-2016 school year as a Freshman at The King's Academy, where he helped champion the middle shcool program to a perfect 9-0 record last fall. Standing at 6-foot-2 and 165-pounds, Johnson has the build of a prospect who could succeed at the high school playing level. He currently runs a 4.6-forty-yard dash and has the ability to beat you not only with his feet but also with his arm.
Having a father who played collegiately and coached in the NFL and major college level is significant for Johnson’s development. His father performs quarterback training with him three days a week where they work on various agiltiy drills as well as passing drills.
When he’s not training as a quarterback, he’s lifting weights twice a week and also honing his basketball skills. He is involved with AAU basketball, playing all positions. Later this spring he will attend the Simper Fidelis Football Camp (March 22) and Rivals Camp (May 10), both in Los Angeles. He will also participate in the Nike Quarterback Camp in Eugene, Ore., on June 13.
Academically inclined as a math student, Johnson likes the prospect of quarterbacking California in the future because he “could succeed in their offense and they have strong academic programs,” he said.
He also has an eye on Texas and Florida State in the beginning stages of his recruitment.
“I would love to be coached by (Texas’) Charlie Strong, and Florida State, they produce good quarterbacks and I’d like to be coached by Jimbo Fisher.”
