The Pella Titans 14U (pictured above) won its first USSSA tournament title of the year this past weekend at the Triple Crown Classic one day event in North Liberty, Iowa. Manager Jamie Dunsbergen’s squad went 3-0 and outscored opponents by a combined margin of 22-11.
The Classic attracted 102 total teams from the 7u to 14u age groups that had several different formats. The teams played condensed schedules to avoid the holiday the following day. The 14-Major division featured eight teams, all from Iowa. They were broken into two pools of four to play in a two-game round robin round. The winner of each pool would then advance to face off in the title game.
The Titans began play at Mercer Park in Iowa City versus the Saints- Silver 14U from Fairfax. They won 7-4 and played a couple hours later against Linn Mar Black. Linn Mar was playing in its first game of the tournament and was still looking for its first In Class victory of the season. The Titans won convincingly 9-2 and put themselves in a great position to win the group. The fourth squad in Pool A were the Little Hawks Red who split its two games.
As the Pella Titans emerged as the only unblemished team on its pool, as did Trojan Green 14U in Pool B. They won 9-2 over the Osky Ice and 6-2 against Bulltown Baseball Gold to set up a competitive finals matchup.
Both teams playing its third game in the same day left it all out on the diamond. The Titans came out on top 6-5 to sink the Trojan Green squad from Coralville to 2-7 on the early season.
The Titans will be back in action this weekend at the Iowa Sticks Classic. In pool play they’ll take on two AAA classified squads, the Waukee Wildcats and Steel. Check back next week to see if the Titans can win consecutive tournaments.
The Titans’ previous USSSA tournament appearance came in the weekend prior at the CIS Kickoff Classic NIT where they went 1-3 overall. Their lone win came over the Rams Gold, 8-7.
