Toronto Bulldogs Win 23rd Annual Brick Invitational

(Youth1) – Last week 14 of the best squirt major teams in the world came together in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to compete in the 23rd Annual Brick Invitational Super Novice Hockey Tournament. The Toronto Bulldogs proved to be the best team there as they went a perfect 8-0 en route to capturing the tournament crown.

The Bulldogs cruised to three straight victories through the first three days as they defeated the Winnipeg Junior Jets 6-1, the Montreal Ice Storm 4-2 and the Connecticut bulldogsYankees 5-0. On Thursday the Bulldogs struck twice in the opening period and eventually held on for the 2-1 win to defeat Team Brick Alberta. In their final two games of pool play on Friday, they beat the California 02s 4-1 and the BC Junior Canucks 3-0.

In the semi-finals on Saturday, the Bulldogs took on the BC Junior Canucks for the second straight game. The two teams were even after the opening period as the Bulldogs received a goal from Cole Perfetti, while the Junior Canucks got a power play goal from Kalen Szeto. They again traded goals in the second period as Cole O’Hara found the back of the net for the Bulldogs, only to be answered by Garett Valk of the Junior Canucks. The final period was all Toronto as they struck twice in a row, the first an unassisted goal by Ryan O’Rourke and the second on the power play off the stick of Tyler Tullio. The Junior Canucks would pull to within one, but that was as close as they would get as Perfetti added an empty net goal late to seal the deal as the Bulldogs took home the 5-3 win to advance to the championship game on Sunday.

The finals saw the Bulldogs taking on the Detroit Red Wings, who were coming off a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Junior Jets in their semi-final game. Toronto held a 1-0 lead after the opening period as they received a goal by Isaac MacLeod with the assists going to Frankie Carogioiello and Cole Perfetti. The Bulldogs doubled their lead in the 2nd period on a short-handed goal by Ellis Rickwood. Special teams continued to play a big role for Toronto as they struck twice on the power play in the middle stanza, both off the stick of Cole O’Hara to give them a 4-0 lead after two. The Bulldogs’ strong defense and goaltending would continue in the final period as they allowed the Red Wings to put only two shots on goal as they held on for the 4-0 win to be crowned champions.
