The Freshmen making their presence known on defense so far this season

Youth1 looks at some of the Class of 2027 prospects that have been making their presence known on defense so far this season.

Abram Edwards | 6-3 | 240 | Linebacker | Indiana

Edwards has made 54 total tackles (35 solo) in six games this season. He already has the size of a college linebacker. Edwards does a great job of plugging up the middle. He's also lined up on the defensive line for his high school team. It'll be interesting to see how he physically fills out. That'll determine how long he continues to play the linebacker position.

Bradley Byrd | 5-10 | 175 | Linebacker | North Carolina

In five games, Byrd has made 53 total tackles (20 solo).

Chuck Roberts | 6-1 | Safety | California

Roberts has made 63 total tackles (28 solo) in five games.

Eli Shaffer | 5-9 | 170 | Safety | Tennessee

Shaffer has made 63 total tackles (13 solo) in six games this season.

Ellis McGaskin | Linebacker | Alabama

McGaskin has made 55 total tackles (26 solo) and sacked the quarterback six times in four games this season.
Jaden Wuerth | 6-2 | 224 | Edge | Georgia

Wuerth has made 51 total tackles (28 solo) and sacked the quarterback nine times in five games this season. He is strong at the point of attack and has impressive strength for his age. I can see him giving offensive lineman problems off the edge and inside for the next few years.

Jackson Coffee | Linebacker | Tennessee

Coffee has made 72 total tackles (13 solo) ans sacked the quarterback twice in six games this season.

Jalaythan Mayfield |  6-0 | 170 | Safety | North Carolina

Mayfield has accumulated 54 total tackles (22 solo) in five games this season. I watched some of his film and he is lined up at free safety in most of the plays that I watched. I think it says a lot that the coaching staff trusts him enough to have him as the last line of defense at the safety position. Mayfield is aggressive and is a good open-field tackler. Keep an eye on him.

Quinton Cypher | 6-2 | 200 | Linebacker | North Carolina

Cypher has made 61 total tackles (37 solo), intercepted once pass, and has one quarterback sack in five games this season. What I like about him is that he's always moving forward and is a sideline-to-sideline type backer. Cypher also looks real comfortable when he drops back into his zone in pass coverage.

Tamatoa Gaoteote | Linebacker | Nevada

Gaoteote has made 55 total tackles (35 solo) and has four sacks in six games this season. Gaoteote received his first offer from Hawaii back on May 3. I couldn't find a height and weight for Gaoteote but he looks athletic and quick. Would like to see more film on him for further analysis.
