Grassroots Has Its Own Star DE Named Clowney

The Grassroots Youth Football League continues to prove why it is one of the best leagues in the area because of the talent that dons the field every

 weekend.

The league has a special program called the Game Changers, where its elite athletes are basically already on Division I watch lists because of their stellar play and tremendous upside as they continue to grow.

A player who fits that exact definition is the 6’5, 180 lb. DE/WR Demon Clowney from Baltimore. Clowney is a pure beast on the defensive front that looks seemingly unblockable, but the key to his success is his pure athletic ability.

When Clowney was first announced to the team he said he was a little unsure how to feel about it. “I really didn’t know what it was at the time,” Clowney said. But he says when he did know that he was considered one of the best athletes in the area that it meant a lot to him, “I felt good. I was thanking Coach Mike (Anderson, creator/owner of Grassroots). It was a good opportunity.”

The Game Changers had their first inaugural meeting at the University of Maryland and Head Coach Randy Edsall even spoke to the group. Clowney said he enjoyed his time at Maryland but specifically the interaction with the coaches. “Just talking to the Maryland Coach. It felt good cause it’s like a Big Ten College,” Clowney said. “Just to know you’re on the watch list of a Big Ten College.”

“I didn’t know what a watch list was at first, but when I did find out I was pretty amazed,” Clowney added.

This past offseason he has been training really hard, but not for football. He spent most of his summer playing basketball. Clowney has been playing for roughly three years and has been dunking since the 5th grade. He can play any forward position and even center, and currently plays for the notorious Team Melo.

However he did find some time to train for football, but not for his current positions of DE or WR, but at QB! He said he’s been working with a high school QB coach, adding that position to his arsenal.  He said he hasn’t done much, if any training for his current positions, but you couldn’t tell because of his dominance thus far in the season.

He says his athletic ability is key to his on-field success.  “I do everything really. There’s not one position I can’t play,” he said.

Clowney is a star that puts the team first. When asked what were his goals for the season he said, “Just getting my team the wins really. Doing whatever it takes to get these wins.”

Clowney currently plays for the Southern Maryland Heat who are in first place thus far in the Grassroots League, and says what makes his team play so well are the interchangeable parts and great leadership from their coaches.

“Its great really because we have a lot of players who can play a lot of positions,” he said. “Coach Byrd is a great coach.” When asked if Coach Byrd was a big influence on his football success he said, “Certainly! Just his pointers on certain things like my wide receiver routes,” he added.

Clowney currently attends the Woods Academy and says he has a lot of high schools looking for his services next year. St. John’s, Dematha and Good Counsel are at the top of the list, but said there are other schools that have spoken with him this far.

Clowney’s last game of two sacks and a touchdown reception is further evidence that he is more than you’re average player, he’s a Game Changer.
