2013 USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals Recap

This past weekend over 440 Middle School wrestlers took to the mats to compete in the 6th Annual USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals. An event that annually features some of the top youth wrestling talent in the country, this year proved no different as many of the countries best put their skills to the test. 

Wrestlers from 40 states competed in the two-day event at the UNI Dome on the campus of
Northern Iowa.

Here is a look into how each of the brackets placed out:

70-pounds
Logan Ashton of Georgia won his first championship of the season as he posted a 3-0 recored. He went unscored upon during the event as he posted three shutout victories including a 3-0 decision in the finals over Matthew Ramos of Illinois. Winning the bronze medal was Illinois State Champion, Dylan Ragusin, who defeated Noah Surtin of Illinois.

Kansas State Champion and Greco-Roman National Champion, Jace Koelzer (right), added another title to his resume when he claimed the 77-pound Preseason National Title. Koelzer posted a perfect 5-0 record which included a 4-3 decision over Washington State Champion Brandon Kaylor. Wrestling back for third place was Florida State Champion Deandre Demus. Demus defeated Colorado State Champion Mosha Schwartz by a score of 6-4.

84-pounds
Kyle Biscoglia of Iowa continued his strong start to the season as he posted a perfect 5-0 record in the 84-pound bracket. Biscoglia, who came off a 2nd place finish at the Super 32, posted four victories by shutout including his championship match where he defeated Benj Peak of Wisconsin 7-0. Eric Faught, who lost a tough 2-1 match to Biscoglia in the semifinals, wrestled back for third place as he defeated Anthony Zamora of Illinois 6-0.

91-pounds
Ohio State Champion, Dylan D’Emilio, won his first championship of the season with a 6-0 decision over Sean McKenna of Illinois. D’Emilio posted a perfect 7-0 record which included victories over Colorado’s Job Greenwood and Kansas State Champion Cody Phippen. Phippen was able to refocus in the consolation bracket was he won a thrilling 1-0 overtime decision over Colorado State Champion Josiah Nava for third place.

98-pounds
Winning his first championship of the season was Josh Breeding from Ohio who defeated Minnesota’s Peyton Robb in the 98-pound championship 7-2. Breeding impressed as he defeated Nebraska State Champion Connor Laux and defending USA Wrestling Preseason National Champion Juan Bazaldua in the semifinals. Minnesota Triple Crown Winner, Tyler Eischens, won the Consolation Championship when he defeated Kansas State Champion Mason Turner by fall in 2:28.

105-pounds
North Dakota Triple Crown winner, Jared Franek, captured his first USA Wrestling Preseason National Championship as he won an exciting 1-0 overtime match over Ohio’s Caleb Brooks. Iowa State Champion, Alex Thomsen, brought home the third place title with a 3-1 decision over Rhyker Sims of
Iowa.

112-pounds
Wyoming Triple Crown winner, Trevor Jeffries, won his first championship of the season as he claimed the 112-pound USA Wrestling Preseason National title. Jeffries impressed as he posted a perfect 5-0 record which included three shutout victories and two victories by fall. Jeffries won the title when he defeated Michael Crockett of Arkansas 8-0. Taking home the bronze medal was Emille Shannon of Illinois who defeated Sam Stuhl of
Wisconsin in overtime 2-0.

120-pounds
The 120-pound championship was won by Indiana State Champion Brayton Lee. Lee posted a perfect 6-0 record which included a 1-0 decision over Minnesota’s Alex Lloyd. Missouri’s Jarrett Jacques was able to wrestle back for third place after he rattled off eight straight victories in the consolation bracket, including a 4-2 decision over Jaxen Gilmore of Oklahoma in the Consolation Finals.

128-pounds
Minnesota State Champion, Kenny O’Neil, won his first Preseason National Championship as he posted a 1-0 decision over Michigan State Champion Brian Case. Claiming the bronze medal was Marco Groves of Arizona as defeated Ben Sarasin of Iowa 6-2 in the Consolation Finals.

136-pounds
Georgia State Champion, Cody Cochran, won his first USA Wrestling Preseason National Championship when he posted a perfect 5-0 record which included a 7-0 decision over Illinois’ Cole Smith. Wisconsin State Champion, Hayden Krein, battled back in the Consolation bracket by winning four bouts including the finals when he defeated James Noel of Arkansas by fall in 2:05.

144-pounds
Travis Wittlake continued his dominating ways as he added yet another high profile championship to his resume. Wittlake dominated the 144-pound competition as he posted a perfect 4-0 record which included a 15-0 tech-fall victory over Montana’s Brock Bushfield. Wittlake, a National Triple Crown winner, reached the finals when he defeated Wisconsin State Champion Tyler Dow by fall in :44 seconds. Dow was able to bounce back and secure third place with a victory by fall of his own over Jake Patterson of Kansas.

152-pounds
Indiana Triple Crown winner, Mason Parris, impressed in the 152-pound bracket as he posted a perfect 4-0 record which included a victory by fall over Caden Steffen of Minnesota. Braiden Ruffin of Nebraska won the bronze medal when he defeated Austin Rash of Illinois by fall in 2:22. 

160-pounds
Defending USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Champion, Anthony Sherry, won his first title of the season when he won the 160-pound championship. Sherry posted a 4-0 record and defeated Nate Johnson of Colorado in the title bout in sudden victory. Taking home the bronze medal was Jacob Scherber of Minnesota when he defeated Izzy Fox of Illinois by fall in 1:16. 

190-pounds
Anthony Cassioppi of Illinois won his first Preseason National Championship when he defeated Nic Jarvis of Georgia 1-0. Wrestling back for third place was Max Villnow of Wisconsin who defeated Minnesota's Colton Hellman by major decision 11-2. 

265-pounds
Iowa State Champion, Spencer Trenary, won the 265-pound championship when he defeated Cooper Lawson of Iowa by sudden victory 8-6. Taking home the bronze medal was Taylor Fleetwood of Wisconsin who defeated Kody Brower of Illinois by fall in :43.
