Recap: Vermont Junior High State Championships

Over the weekend, 219 wrestlers from 24 competing schools participated in the 2012 Vermont Junior High State Wrestling Tournament at Spaulding High School. 

Ashdin Schaefer (Mt. Anthony) captured the 84 pound championship as he posted a 3-0 record on the day and defeated Marcus Stevens (Mt. Mansfield) in the championship bout by a 12-0 major decision. Nathan Gebo (Middlebury) brought home the bronze medal as he used a 4-2 decision over John Babson (Mt. Anthony) in the consolation finals.

The 89 pound bracket was captured by Calvin Call (Mt. Anthony) who defeated Daniel Bliss (Mt. Mansfield) in the championship by a second period fall in a time of 2:54. Ethan Reardon (Vergennes) who was defeated by Call wrestled back and won the consolation bracket with a second period fall over Billon MacDougall (Middlebury). 

Tyle Raetz (Mt. Anthony) won both of his matches by fall and used a :52 second fall in the finals to capture the 94 pound championship. He defeated teammate Nilu Chirchirillo who reached the finals by injury default. Tyson Cram (Otter Valley) who lost his first match of the day won three matches in the consolation bracket and used a 16-11 decision over Nieko Desebra (Otter Valley) to bring home the third place prize.

Mt. Anthony’s, Zach Sauer, won the 103 pound championship when he defeated Anthony Jones (Essex) by a first period fall in a time of 1:52. Sauer won his first match of the day by fall, which propelled him into the finals. Trevor Bell (Harwood) brought home the bronze medal as he won two bouts in the consolation bracket and scored a second period fall in the consolation finals over Nate Goldman (Mt. Mansfield).

The 107 pound bracket was won by John Stawinski (Essex) as he defeated Jon Perreault (St. Johnsbury) in the championship bout by a 7-1 decision. Perreault’s teammate, Kyle Goodell, took home the bronze medal when he defeated James Whitley (Middlebury) by a 7-1 decision.

Brenden Kendall (Bellows Falls) posted a 3-0 record in the 115 pound bracket and used a first period fall over Jordan Peters (Mt. Anthony) to win the gold. Alex Sheldrick (Middlebury) recorded a second period fall over Matthew Turner (Essex) to bring home the bronze medal. 

The 119 pound championship was awarded to Thomas LaPinto (Mt. Abraham) as he used a 5-3 decision over JJ Whitesell (Mt. Abraham). Patric Lucy (Spaulding) faced off versus Dylan Little (Mt. Abraham) in the consolation finals and Lucy recorded a 24-13 major decision.

Mount Mansfield had a champion crowned at the 124 pound weight class as Andrew Durkin pinned Logan Benoit (Vergennes) in the championship match towards the end of the first period. Dalton Gates (Mt. Anthony) recorded two falls in the consolation bracket as he defeated Jeb Hodsdon (Vergennes) in the first period to win the bronze medal.

The 128 pound bracket was captured by AJ Wright (Mt. Anthony) as he posted a 2-0 record on the day and defeated Dustin Tierney (Vergennes) in the championship bout by fall. Brent Nickerson (Otter Valley) caught Mike Moulton (Middlebury) and was able to record a quick :24 second fall to secure the third place title.

Daimyen Scribner Moral (Mt. Anthony) put on an impressive showing as he recorded all three of his victories by fall en route to the 134 pound state championship. Moral defeated David Howes (Harwood) in a first period fall. Ethan Fuller (Mt. Mansfield) won the bronze medal with his pin over Collin Parker (Otter Valley). 

Zach Allen (Mill River) used a :43 second victory to capture the 140 pound title. He was able to bring Easton Baker (Mt. Mansfield) to his back for the quick victory. Zach Comeau (Vergennes) recorded three victories in the consolation bracket as he fought back to defeat Cameron Carrier (Spaulding) in the third place match. Comeau recorded a pin in a time of 1:27.

The 147 pound championship was captured by Kienan Kittredge (Champlain Valley) as he recorded three victories by fall and defeated teammate Dmitry Lokoba in a time of 1:52. Riley Colompos (Mt. Mansfield) brought home the bronze medal with his 9-4 decision over Brandon Cousino (Vergennes).

Ian Kandzior (Milton) scored a second period fall over Shawn Lussier (Champlain Valley) as he captured the 157 pound championship. Jake Lober (Bellows Falls) defeated Gus Turrant (Mt. Mansfield) in the consolation finals by a 13-0 major decision.

The 170 pound championship was captured by Ryan Paquin (Vergennes) who earned three victories by fall including a :25 second victory in the championship match over Robbie Brangan (Champlain Valley). The third place trophy was awarded to MJ Denis (Otter Valley) as he defeated Timmy Mulvihill (Mt. Mansfield) in the finals by fall.

In best of three series:

98 pounds: Bryce Bernardine (Mt. Mansfield) defeated Matthew Harding (Otter Valley)

111 pounds: Brandon Tyson (Spaulding) ousted Paiger Car (Milton) and Camron Viens (Bellows Falls)

210 pounds: Nate Hoffman (Milton) defeated Jerry Jordan (Fair Haven) and Austin Simpson (Bellows Falls)

185 pounds: Wyatt Leberge (Middlebury) defeated Chris Jordan (Fair Haven)

250 pounds: Dalton Hallock (Mt. Mansfield) defeated teammate Riley Towers (Mt. Mansfield).
