The 2016 Pikes Peak Wrestling League and Colorado USA Wrestling recently hosted their 2016 Colorado State Championship tournament at the Douglas County Events Center in Castle Rock, Colorado. Over 200 wrestlers compete in the 15U age group and below we take a look at the top place winners in each of the 15U weight classes.
In the round-robin 75-pound bracket, Kenny Sailas of Brighton Wrestling was the champion with a 4-0 record. Sailas defeated second-place finisher Marcus Borden of Pomona Elite by a 4-3 decision. The third-place finisher was Maximus Bejarano of Adams City Wrestling.
In the 84-pound bracket, it was Dylan Kruse of Bear Cave Wrestling going 3-0 with two wins by fall including the title match in 1:28 over Rudy Lopez of Colorado Elite. In the second-place match, Eric Griego of Duran Elite beat Lopez by fall in 21 seconds.
Jaron Mahler of SCORE Wrestling Club won all four of his matches in the 90-pound bracket by fall including the title match in 1:07 over Ethan Hays of Rough Rider Wrestling. In third-place was Jose Cerda of the Piasecki Pummelers won by a 4-2 decision over Hays.
Michael Atencio of P.O.W.A. won three matches fall and two others without allowing a point, including a win by a 5-0 decision over Johnny Masopust of Betterman Elite in the title match. Masopust was awarded second place by injury forfeit over Grant Bradley of SCORE Wrestling.
Malachi Contreras of GRIT Athletics went 5-0 in his quest for the 102-pound title culminating with a 4-3 decision over Trey Geyer of the Colorado Outlaws in the title match. In the second-place match, Geyer won by fall in 2:14 over Aiden Okamura of of SCORE Wrestling.
Aaden Valdez of La Gente won four matches by fall in the 109-pound competition before winning the championship match by a 5-2 decision over Alejandro Santillan of the Grandview Wolves. The second-place match was won by Santillan by rule over Bear Cave's Jacob Duran, whom he beat by fall in 50 seconds in the semifinals of the winner's bracket.
In the 116-pound tournament, Jimmy Ramirez III of the Lil Saints won all five of his matches including the title with a 4-2 decision over Brandan Taylor of Pomona Elite. Taylor then lost a tough match for second place, falling in a 6-5 decision to Angel Flores of West Side Wrestling.
The 123-pound title went to Drew Eller of the SOT Academy in impressive fashion as Eller won all five of his matches by fall capped by a victory in 1:11 over Randy Meyer of Olympian Wrestling in the title match. In the second-place match, Myers won by rule over Cody Eaton of Bear Cave by virtue of Myers' win by major decision (12-2) over Eaton in the semifinals of the winner's bracket.
In the 130-pound competition it was Zander Condit of the SOT Academy winning four matches by fall before capturing the title by a 4-2 decision over Miles Beam of Colorado Elite. It was Beam winning by a 3-0 decision over Beau Parker of Bear Cave in the second-place match.
Victor Rangel of Co Top Team capped his 4-0 run through the 137-pound competition by winning by major decision (10-0) over Jake Martin of the SOT Academy in the title match. In the second-place match, Martin bounced back to win by a 6-1 decision in the second-place match over Dakota Key of Legacy Boltz.
In the 144-pound bracket, Jaziah Waley Jr. of the Colorado Elite won two matches by technical fall and two others by fall, including the title match in 46 seconds over Preston Morton of the Cheyenne Mountain Wrestling Club. In the second-place match, Morton bounced back to win by major decision (11-2) over Sam Hart of Junior Cougar Wrestling.
Isaiah Salazar of Team Salazar won his three matches by fall in the 156-pound bracket capped by a win in 2:03 over Michael Cornelius of Rocky Mountain Wrestling. In the second-place match, Joseph Renner of the Grandview Wolves defeated Cornelius by a 7-5 decision.
Elijah Olson of the Mile High Wrestling Club went 3-0 to claim the title of the 172-pound class, culminating with a 4-2 decision over Michael Serna of Bear Cave in the championship. In the second-place match, Serna won by rule over Alec Hargreaves of Lobo Wrestling by virtue of his win by fall in 3:15 in the semifinals of the winner's bracket.
The 190-pound competition was in a round-robin format won by Jared Volcic of Southern Peak Wrestling with a 4-0 record. Volcic defeated second-place finisher Deonte Bridges of the Cheyenne Mountain Wrestling Club by a 6-2 decision. Finishing third was Tyler Carpenter of the Broomfield Eagles.
Andy Garcia of La Gente swept two matches from Bryant Walker of the Broomfield Eagles, both by fall in 1:20 and 1:18, to capture the 265-pound championship.
