This past weekend 280 middle school wrestlers from Iowa competed in the 2017 USA Wrestling State Championships, the first state championships of the season.
Leading the way this past weekend were Carter Fousek and Drake Ayala of Sebolt Wrestling Club. Both wrestlers are two of the top young wrestlers in the state and showcased that this past weekend.
Fousek defended his 2016 USA Wrestling State Championship by posting a perfect 4-0 record which included his 6-1 decision over Garret Rinken of Waverly Area Wrestling Club.
Ayala improved upon his silver medal finish a season ago as he pinned his way to the finals and then used an impressive 13-3 major decision over Blaine Frazier of DC Elite.
The performance of both wrestler helped the Sebolt Wrestling Academy earn the top spot in team points as they outscored second place finisher High Altitude Wrestling Club 282-275.50. Other Sebolt Wrestlers who captured titles included 75-pound Ryder Block, 90-pound Lucas Uliano, and 95-pound Matthew Lewis.
