(Youth1) â The Inaugural Michigan Girls Wrestling State Championships created an opportunity for girls in the Midwest to compete versus one another at a truly competitive level. âThis was a great opportunity for the girlâs to compete against some of the best in the state of Michigan and from surrounding states,â said Tournament Director Brent Harvey.

With the help of parents and volunteers and the graciousness of Fowlerville High School, over sixty girls were able to compete for a state championship. âOverall the event was a huge success,â said Harvey. âThere was a lot of great competition and the girlâs wrestled hard beginning to end. We had girls from Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin make the trip to take on some of the best in the state of Michigan.â

The 49-53 pound weight class was awarded to Johanna Palshan (Down River) as she posted a 2-0 record. She defeated silver medalist Katie Bishop (Indiana) 20-10 and also defeated bronze medalist Abby Wheeler (Michigan WomenâsWrestling) by the score of 20-10. Bishop defeated Wheeler 10-7 to decide the second place finisher.

Rayana Sahagun (Michigan Xtreme) took home gold in the 57-59 pound bracket as she used a thrilling 6-4 decision over Elizabeth Bennett (Almost Kids) and a 1:35 fall over Gracie Plank (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling). In the battle for the silver, Bennett defeated Plank by fall in a time of :27 seconds.

The 60-64 pound championship was awarded to Michigan Womenâs Wrestling Mackenzie Kiesgen. Kiesgen defeated silver medalist and teammate Maeve St. John by fall in a time of :58 seconds and defeated bronze medalist Leah Bishop (Indiana) by fall in 1:55. St. John defeated Bishop by fall in 1:26 to claim the second place prize.

Sarah Berlin (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) was awarded gold in the 67-73 pound bracket as she put on an impressive showing by defeating Manelle Conlen (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) by fall in a time of 1:39. She then defeated Sarah Hinsley (Down River) by a first period fall in a time of :30 seconds. Conlen was awarded the second place prize when she also defeated Hinsley by a first period fall.

At 84-86, the championship was won by Kelsey Coger (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling), as she defeated Chole Doherty (Down River) twice by fall. In the first match of the day Coger won by fall in the second period and then won her last match of the day by fall in a time of :25 seconds.

Elizabeth Geairn (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) captured the 108-115 pound championship as she defeated teammate Sherri Walbeck by a first period fall and by a 6-1 decision.

In the 93-98 pound middle school division, Abigail Adams (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) defeated silver medalist and teammate Megyn Ostrom in a thrilling 5-4 decision. She then defeated Miranda Byklfsky (Howell) by fall in 1:27 to go a perfect 2-0 on the day. In the second place title match, Ostrom defeated Byklfsky by fall in 1:04.

One of the best youth girls wrestlers in the country, Theresa Rankin (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) put on an impressive showing as she defeated teammate Murrissia Hampton by fall in :55 seconds and defeated Alanna Schwartz (Down River) by fall in :47 seconds. Hampton then defeated Schwartz by fall in :32 seconds to win the silver medal.

Allie Hess (Indiana) took home gold in the 125-135 pound bracket as she defeated Abbey Schaub (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) by fall in a time of 4:25. Hess then defeated Miranda Church (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) by a decision 9-3 to claim the top spot. Schaub then took on Church for a battle of second place and Schaub defeated her 13-6.

Patricia Martin (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) took home gold in the 105 pound bracket as she defeated Brittnee Coss (Eaton Rapids) twice by fall. She won her first match in a time of 3:26 and the second one in a time of 4:26.

The 112 pound championship was captured by Erin Messerschmidt (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) as she defeated teammate Vanessa Garcia by fall in a time of 1:22 and aging by a first period fall in a time of :36 seconds.

Kasey Ricketts (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) took home gold in the 117 pound bracket as she posted a 2-0 record on the day. She defeated silver medalist Amber Smith by a 5-1 decision and then defeated teammate Brook Harvey by fall in a time of 1:56. Smith took on Harvey in the second place match and defeated her by decision 9-2.

The 130 pound bracket was captured by Staffanie Hampton (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) as she defeated a trio of teammates. In her first match she defeated Mary Smith by a third period fall in a time of 4:34. She then took on and defeated Kaitlyn Collins by a major score of 11-3 and finally pinned Bethany Church in 1:04. Smith was able to outlast and defeat Kaitlyn Collins for silver as she recorded a 13-4 major decision.

Olivia Cepak (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) won gold in the 139 pound bracket as she posted a 2-0 record on the day. Cepak defeated silver medalist Cheyannn Phipps (Battle Creek Central) by fall in a time of 1:59. She also defeated Mollee Pond (Oconomowoc High School) by a first period fall in a time of 1:17. In the battle for second place, Phipps was able to outlast and defeat Pond by fall in the final seconds of the match.

The 148 pound championship was won by Brooke Martin (White Cloud) as she defeated Leanne Kneer (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) twice by fall. She first defeated her in the first period in a time of :45 seconds and then again in the second period in a time of 2:53.

Brittany Harvey (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) captured the top spot in the 159 pound division as she posted a perfect 3-0 record. She defeated Samantha Cushard in the title match by a score of 10-3. Devan Burke, a teammate of Harveyâs, took home the bronze medal when she defeated fourth place finisher Dijana Corbin (Kellogesville) by fall in 3:55.

The 172 pound bracket featured two of the states best wrestlers in Kaitlyn Hill (Michigan Womenâs Wrestling) and teammate Autumn Rox. Hill took on Rox, a 2011 Cadet National Champion, and defeated her in a very exciting match 2-0. Rox walked away with the silver as she defeated bronze medalist Justice Powell (Kettle Moraine) 12-7.
