For the Boston Junior Whalers Hockey Association, theyâre taking the term âdynastyâ to a whole new level. From the â99-â05 age groups, the Whalers have won five championships over the past two weeks and are leaving every one of their opponents begging for mercy.
Over this past weekend, the â04 and â05 Jr. Whalers swept the NH Summer Showdown Series at the Rinks at Exeter. The â04 squad overmatched everyone who crossed their paths, as they put together a perfect 5-0 record and defeated the New England NorâEasters, 3-1, in the finals to take home the title. There was no debating who the top team was in this tournament, as the Whalers outscored their opponents 33-7.
After watching their friends and teammates win the championship, the â05 Jr. Whalers wanted to join in on the fun and make a statement for themselves. Following their opening loss to the Spencer Selects (7-6), a light bulb went on in the heads of the Whalers, as they dominated from there forward. They would go on to outscore their opponents 65-8 and eventually beat those same Selects to win the championship.
Both the â04 and â05 Whalers had a lot of expectations and determination to go on after watching the â03 team win yet another title. The Boston Junior Whalers â03 squad captured the Boston Challenge Cup, making it the third championship in as many tries for the first year team.
After winning their first four games by a total of 30-3, the Whalers defeated one of the top teams, the Boston Selects, 6-4, to bring home the hardware for themselves. Wingers Hunter Dunn and Scott Lonergan had multiple-point games up front, and goalie Greyson Pane was like a brick wall between the pipes.
The Jr. Whalers â99 team also stood out, as they were crowned Hub Cup Champions last Sunday, after compiling a 6-0 record en route to their title. The â99 Whalers defeated the Rhode Island Saints, 2-0, in the finals, as goaltender Brandon Graf recorded his second shutout. Both Ryan Fraser and Peter White found the back of the net and secured the gold once again for the Whalers.
Last, but certainly not least, the â00 Whalers started this title run off for the organization during the month of August by winning the 2013 Pro-Am Mini Chowder Cup Championship. The Junior Whalers Black made it known that they were going the be the team to beat, as they went undefeated in Round Robin-play and outscored their opponents 15-1 in tournament play.
The Junior Whalers came out flying from the get-go, by scoring three goals in the first six minutes of the game, two from Nick Castro and one from Cullen Young. Mitch Hoelscher made the lead 4-0 and Kyle Peters put the icing on the cake to seal the victory, 5-0.
The five championships that the Whalers organization won have only come in the month of August. Throughout the entire summer season the organization has won a combined 15 titles, making it seem as though there will be no end to this dynasty run.
