Two Claim 2018 Schoolboy National Triple Crowns

The USA Wrestling National Triple Crown is one of the most prestigious feats a young wrestlers can capture throughout the season. To earn the award, wrestlers must capture a national title in the folkstyle, freestyle, and greco-roman championships. Heading into the last two championships of the season, four wrestlers had hopes of claiming the award but only two were successful in doing so.

Marc-Anthony McGowan has been one of, if not the top, youth wrestler in the country all season long. He showed why again as he went undefeated in both styles earlier this month. He won the freestyle national championship by posting a perfect 4-0 record which included four straight shutout tech-fall victories. He then went on to win the Greco-Roman National Championship by posting a perfect 3-0 record. Earlier this year he won the Folkstyle National Championship by posting a perfect 5-0 record.

Joining McGowan as the only other schoolboy National Triple Crown winner was 106-pound  Brennan Van Hoecke of Florida. Van Hoecke won the Folkstyle National Championship in April after defeating Avery Allen of Montana 5-3. He followed that up by winning four straight matches in the Freestyle Nationals event which included a 16-10 victory over Evan Herriman of Michigan. He completed the Triple Crown quest by winning the Greco event with four straight tech-fall victories.

The event also crowned six other National Triple Crown winners as the following wrestlers won the award in the Novice and Intermediate divisions:

Legend Ellis of Oklahoma (Intermediate 67)

Hudson Rogers of Idaho (Intermediate 87)

Aaron Stewart of Illinois (Intermediate 77)

Cooper Rowe of Minnesota (Intermediate 84)

Alessio Perentin of New Jersey (Novice 92)

Bas Diaz of Florida (Novice 117)
