The 2023 class is full of supreme Quarterback talents that are already making a name for themselves. Among the premier QB talents from the 2023 class is Texas native Jackson Gilkey.
The Ennis, Texas resident has made a name for himself for his ability to lead a team from the QB position. Gilkey was named to Youth1 Media's 2018 edition of the Elite101 rankings, released last fall. For those unfamiliar, the Elite101 rankings serve as a valuable resource for pinpointing the nation's absolute best athletes entering their 8th grade seasons. Jackson was awarded the #34 spot and recognized as one of the best QB prospects from his class.
Standing at 6'2" 170 lbs., Gilkey has outstanding size for a young QB. His height allows him a clear field of vision to see down field, read the defense, and locate a receiver. He has impressive pocket awareness and sound mechanics to match. Give him time in the pocket and he'll dice the defense up. His ability to feel pressure, keep his eyes down field, move his feet to improve his throwing lane, and deliver the ball on target is stellar.
"My favorite part of playing football, is competing with my teammates," Gilkey told Youth1.com.
"I enjoy the leadership involved in playing quarterback," he added.
Perhaps most impressive is Gilkey's combination of arm strength and accuracy. His throws are on time and on target. He can thread the needle on tough passes across the middle as well as drop in dimes on deep balls down the field.
"Leadership, calm under pressure, decision making ability, pocket presence, and arm strength," Gilkey said of his strengths on the field.
Gilkey recently participated in NextGen's invite-only main event The Show at the IMG Academy in Florida. After a remarkable performance at The Show, Gilkey was named to NextGen's Future Freak List as well as the 2019 All-Show Second Team.
Jackson enjoyed learning from the coaches while getting better by competing against other elite youth athletes from around the nation.
"I had a great experience learning from some great coaches, and meeting some very talented athletes. My favorite part of the The VI and The Show was getting to compete against and play with some outstanding athletes from around the country," Gilkey said.
"I was proud of my performance, we were the #1 seed coming out of Saturday, and although we didn't win the championship I felt that we competed hard. I also was recognize as one of the 2019 Noretta Roberts: Academic Excellence Award winners," he added.
Gilkey's star has been on the rise for quite some time. Aside from being named to Youth1's Elite101 last fall and participating in NextGen's The Show last month, he's also participated in plenty of elite camps and combines including NFA Camp (invited to The Duel), FBU Regional Camp, USA Football Regional, and the FBU Texas Showdown.
As he looks to take his game to another level, Gilkey has some areas of improvement in mind.
"I continue to work with my QB coach on improving my throwing motion, and increase my power and accuracy. I also continue work to improve my mobility in and out of the pocket with my speed coach," Gilkey said.
"Finally, I am working with the high school coaches to learn the offense, and better read defenses at the high school level," he added.
2023 QB Jackson Gilkey is one of the top Quarterbacks from his class. With his ability to impact the game with his arm, he's a young athlete to keep tabs on going forward.
