Rutgers Hosts the Inaugural ATHLEAD 2019 Middle School Combine & Skills Showcase

Rutgers Football and ATHLEAD will kick off the celebration of the 150th anniversary of college football with a bang on Saturday, April 13. At Rutgers’ HighPoint.com Stadium in Piscataway, N.J., ATHLEAD will hold its inaugural 2019 Middle School Combine & Skills Showcase. The top 6th, 7th and 8th-grade football players will participate in combine testing, skills, drills and competitions. After the event, Rutgers Football will hold its annual Scarlet-White Spring Game. All ATHLEAD families are invited to stay for the game, and at halftime, ATHLEAD athletes will be recognized on the field.

ATHLEAD was created by former Rutgers Football student-athletes, who believe that leadership and life lessons taught through athletics are the truest benefit in sports. All ATHLEAD events are built around Leadership Development sessions, where learning how lessons on the field can be transferred to various aspects of life including business, family and personal. All ATHLEAD events will be only held on college campuses.

The Combine & Skills Showcase will be coached by many of New Jersey's top public and private high school coaches, who will lead individual drills. Top football trainers from Athletic Republic will be working with the athletes, who will be taught how to perform tests as well as techniques to take the combine tests. There will also be Leadership Development sessions delivered by Rutgers staff.

Youth1 Sports will also be on site, managing the combine testing and reporting on top performers. Youth1 Sports offers "best-in-class" testing with fully automated laser testing and hands-off data capture. It provides credible results that are certified to be accurate. Attendees will have the chance to earn exposure and get ranked by the nation’s premier middle school sports publication. Youth1 Sports is an official partner for ATHLEAD Combines & Showcases.

In addition, there will be numerous former Rutgers football-letter winners, including current NFL stars, who will be on hand that day signing autographs. NFL alum and Rutgers Football legend Marco Battaglia will speak to all parents and players. Plus, the Rutgers Athletic Department will feature Dr. Kristina Navarro, who spearheads Leadership and Strategic Partnerships at Rutgers. Dr. Navarro will speak to parents and players about how Rutgers works with student-athletes on developing transferable life skills.

The Combine & Skills Showcase is scheduled from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. Following the event is Rutgers’ Spring Game, at 3:30.

Rick Mantz, Director of High School Relations at Rutgers Football, is proud that the University is hosting the Combine & Skills Showcase.

“We’re very excited to add [the Showcase] as an event with the Spring Game.” he said. “We’ve gotten a great response from parents and kids already. We love to be able to have kids on campus. It should be a great day.”

In conjunction with the Spring Game, Rutgers will feature food trucks, activities for kids, including bounce houses, and much more.

The Combine & Skills Showcase and Rutgers’ Spring Game will help start a yearlong celebration of the 150th Anniversary of college Football, with Rutgers being the birthplace site. Rutgers and its New Jersey neighbor, Princeton, played the first game of intercollegiate football on November 6, 1869, with Rutgers winning 6-4.
