When Samantha Gordon, the nine-year-old football star and Youtube sensation, joined the Ute Conference Football Team (an all-boys tackle league in Salt Lake City) as starting quarterback, her father, Brent Gordon, decided to record her games. The decision paid off, as the footage captured 35 touchdowns, 1,911 rush yards, and 65 tackles by Sam. The highlight reel was viewed almost five million times in three days before being taken down due to a copyright claim. But Sam Gordon had already become a viral sensation.
In 2012, Sam became the first female football player pictured on the famous Wheaties cereal box. She was invited to the Super Bowl last February, and sat next to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in his private suite. (Goodell had previously invited Sam to a Giants game). Sam was also a special guest at a 49ers practice, appeared in national radio shows, and was interviewed on ABC’s Good Morning America.
"I wanted to prove girls could play football; It's not just a boys' sport," she told ESPN's Hannah Storm.
