Seven Wrestlers Defend Colorado State Championship Title


ColoradoStateChampionships(Youth1 Wrestling) – Over the weekend, wrestlers from the state of Colorodo had the opportunity to participate in two state championship events that were taking place throughout the state. The 2013 Colorado State Championships - PPWL/USAW took place at the Douglas County Events Center in Castle Rock, Co while the Colorado Youth All State Wrestling Championships took place at the Budweiser Event Center in Loveland, CO. Over 1,200 of the states youth grapplers competed between the two events with the hopes of capturing a coveted Colorado State Championship. 

Below, we take a look at the top palce winners in the 15U division from the Colorado State Championships - PPWL/USAW event. 

74-pound
Malik Heinselman of the SOT Academy defended his 2012 Colorado State Championship as he defeated another defending champion in Ryan Chauvin of Rocky Mountain Wrestling. Heinselman used a pair of takedowns to hold off Chauvin for an exciting 4-1 victory. Finishing third place was Logan Freestone of the Grit Athletics who defeated Cole Miller from Rocky Mountain Wrestling by fall in :47 seconds.

82-pound
Jason Hanenberg of Rocky Mountain Wrestling defended his state championship when he defeated Jalen Fisher of Widefield in 1:57 of the 82-pound championship. It was consolation champion Benjamin Euresti of Bear Cave Wrestling who took home the second place prize after defeating Fisher in the true 2nd place match by fall in 2:20. 

88-pound
Preston Weaver of the Legend Jr Titans won his first state championship when he defeated teammate Dustin Mervin by fall in 4:30 of the 88-pound championship match. Taking home the consolation championship was Alexzandra Vasquez from Duran Wrestling Club as he defeated Brayden Mogg of Olympian Wrestling 6-4.

95-pound
Coming away with the 95-pound title was Gerimie Meier of SOT Academy. Meier captured his first state title when he defeated defending state champion, Hunter Matney of Score Wrestling, 2-0, in the 95-pound championship bout. Stephen Dabelko from Steel City Elite took home the 3rd place prize with a 3-2 decision over Justin Lien from Olympian Wrestling.

102-pound
Winning the 102-pound championship was 2012 State Champion Jacob Greenwood of the Grit Athletics Wrestling. Greenwood defended his title when he defeated Isaiah De La Cerda of P.O.W.A. 7-4. De La Cerda captured second place over consolation finalist David Opheim of Score Wrestling by a score of 6-2.

109-pound
Grant Willits of the Steel City Elite won the 109-pound with a 3-1 decision over Zac Hanenberg of the Mat Burners in the final match. Willits went 5-0 to capture his first state championship. Hanenberg finished in second with a 5-1 final over third seed Thomas Stager of Mile High Wrestling.

116-pound
Steel City Elite’s Christophe Sandoval won his second consecutive state championship after a 12-0 defeat over Britton Holmes of Peyton. The title was Sandoval’s third of the season as he also captured a New Mexico National Showdown and a Wild West Championship. Winning the third place title was Anthony Salazar from Pinecreek Eagles Wrestling with a :55 fall over Brandon Lucero from Cheyenne Mountain Wrestling.

123-pound
Hunter Willits of the Steel City Elite defended his state championship when he won the 123-pound title after pinning Wyatt Lee of Peyton in 4:04 in the final round. Lee pinned consolation bracket winner, Jared Connell of Oympian Wrestling in 0:41 in the battle for second.

130-pound
Defending his 2012 state championship was Peter Isais of Pinecreek Eagles Wrestling who defeated Zac Baker of Cheyenne Mountain Wrestling in sudden victory 4-2 victory in the 130-puond title match. Baker captured second place with a sudden victory 5-3 decision against consolation champion Justin Davis of the Steel City Elite.

137-pound
Elias Manzanares of P.O.W.A. defeated Daytwan Shirley of Westside Wrestling Club in thrilling fashion, 3-2, to win the 137-pound gold medal. Fabian Estrada from SOT Academy took home third place when he defeated Colby Ball from GIRT Athletics Wrestling 5-3.

144-pound
Dante Garcia of the Steel City Elite pinned Ryan Weber of Discovery Canyon in 3:41 to win his first state championship in the 144-pound bracket. Felix Ortega of Prairie Rattlers Wrestling finished in third place when he defeated Ian Mullins from Sieracki’s Mat by fall in 1:09.

156-pound
Peyton’s Jimmy Weaver secured his second consecutive state title when he won the title for the 156-pound weight class with a pin in 2:35 against Ezequial Silva of Junior Cougar Wrestling. Weaver was a winner of last year’s 144-pound championship. Consolation champion Zeke Johnson of Score Wrestling took second after pinning Ezequial Silva in 2:31.

172-pound
In a two person round robin, Nicholas Cote of Westside Wrestling secured first place when he defeated Donavin Rincon of the Steel City Elite in the championship by fall in 4:25 and 1:56.

190-pound
Zach Garrard of Cheyenne Mountain captured top honors of the 190-pound championship after a 0:29 pin and a :35 second pin on Parker North-Wanner of the Mat Burners. Due to the two-person bracket, Parker secured second.

265-pound
Winning the 265-pound title was none other than Hunter Mooring of Pueblo West with a pin on Fox Garza of Niwot Junior Wrestling in 2:24 in the championship match. Garza secured second place with a 4-0 victory over Marcos Olivas of the Grit Athletics.
