Rocky Mountain District Championship Preview - 14U Tier I

(Youth1 Hockey) - This Thursday, the Rocky Mountain Districts will kick off in Provo, Utah.  Emotions will be running high, as the winner will represent their district in the 2013 USA Hockey National Championship in Pittsburgh, PA.  Here is a preview of all six teams participating.

Dallas Stars Elite - The Stars are ranked No.15 in the country, and will be expected to make a deep run in the tournament.  Last weekend, the Stars went 1-1-1, in a trio of games against the St. Louis Blues.  Prior to this, they won three in a row. The Stars have won all their matches against the Alliance this season, and they defeated the Roughriders 3-1 on February 2nd.  If they have a repeat performance, they’ll be in good shape.

Colorado Thunderbirds - Ranked No. 6 in the country, the Thunderbirds are arguably the favorite to go all the way in the tournament. The Thunderbirds have won eight out of 10, defeating the Rocky Mountain Roughriders last time out.  Champions of The Mile High Thanksgiving Day Tournament, the Thunderbirds have given up only 79 goals through the season, which averages to 1.4 goals per clip.

Rocky Mountain RoughRiders - The Roughriders have struggled against the Stars and Thunderbirds this season, but most of their losses were decided by only one or two goals. They’ll have a huge opportunity to gain redemption this weekend, as they’ll face both the Stars and Thunderbirds again. The Roughriders played some of their best hockey in January when they went 5-1 during a six game stretch. If they regain that form, they’ll be dangerous.

Arizona Bobcats - The Bobcats come into the tournament hot, having won five in a row. They’ve scored five goals in all but one of those games, and have posted two shutouts in the process.  They’ve won all four meetings against the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes, and Texas Alliance, and they’ll hope for similar results as they play again. Their pairing against the Colorado Thunderbirds will be a highly anticipated matchup.

Dallas Alliance - Last time out the Alliance lost a double-header to the Stars. They’ll look to make amends this weekend as they’ll face the Stars in their second contest. The Alliance scored 32 goals during a five game stretch earlier in the season, showing they have an ability to put numbers on the board. If they play to their potential, anything can happen.

Phoenix Jr. Coyotes - The Coyotes have struggled as of late, but they’ll look to end the season on a positive note.  A couple weeks back, they picked up a big victory over Okotoks Oilers, and they’ll look to build on that.  Many of their losses have come by one and two goal margins only, so they are a much better team than their record indicates.
